Holidays

Been a while since I've posted, mainly because we've been on holidays in the (not so) Sunny South East and internet reception wasnt so hot.

Yep, that blasted recession has kicked in, and rather than hitting France we've spent 2 weeks in Rosslare Strand in Wexford (although as an alternative to France its pretty good).

K got to go swimming,

(note the wetsuit, it might be August, but sea swimming in Ireland is kinda cold, even in summer)

she also tried horse riding (this princess majorly loved it),

(this time its rain gear we needed, there's a reason for all the green grass over here....)

and kayaking in a surf heavy sea (she wasn't a big fan, and no photo as daddy was trying to paddle!).

Oh, and in honour of a certain American 'commentator'....

She definitely proved You Can Do It (but daddy didnt video much of it, so we'll have to put our Cecil B De Mille ambitions on hold for a while...)

M and myself were looking forward to getting some intense management in, and we've had good days and bad days (sometimes our actions seemed to make little enough impact on the sugar levels, but ya gotta keep trying).

We did manage to add to our list of food kryptonite (M was pretty much aware of all this already, but its still kinda new to me);

Potatoes  -  Good
Pasta - Bad
Custard - Bad
Custard & Sugar Free Jelly - Good (go figure...)
Toast - avoid at all times!!!!
Fruit - Good (thankfully, as its given us a lot more leeway around snack planning),
McDonalds Happy Meal - not as bad as might be expected, but we wont be making a habit of it....

Thanks for the comments around very high blood sugars and possible causes, it put my mind at ease that there were others who had gone through this.   K has stabilised a bit, and we have upped her insulin (the day after my last post i was on to the hospital at 5a.m. getting the okay for a unit of Novorapid to combat a high of 17 with keytones of 1.1 (scary), so her bedtime insulin has been increased).

Late night Insultard has gone from 7.5 units to max 11 units, and for the last few nights 9.5.

Its possible K was going thru a growth spurt (she is up about a centimetre since we last measured her), but our quarterly hospital appointment is tomorrow morning so we can discuss same with the Consultant (I've a long list of questions for her!!!)

  1. I am so on board with the wetsuit thing... it's been around 40 degrees F here and I played water volleyball in a neighbour's pool the other night. I was shivering almost the whole time! I don't know what it is with me and water, but I get sooooo cold!

What kind of bread are you using for the toast? For Elise, I use whole grain, whole wheat bread and I find it rarely spikes Elise. White bread on the other hand... yikes.

Glad you had a good holiday!

  2. Hi Joanne,
yep its white bread that sends K skyrocketing, only when its toasted though, the untoasted variety in sandwiches doesnt affect her too much.

We've tried the healthier breads but no dice, she wont try them out at all......

  3. ahhh. I guess in that respect we were "Lucky" that Elise was diagnosed so young. She was basically a clean slate. And she's always been a good eater. You have to love a 3 year old who loves broccoli!

  4. thanks for sharing about your hols! i especially loved the ice cream pic, international style!

as time goes on, it's nice to get a better handle on what foods will cause you trouble or not.

glad you got through the ketones scariness relatively unscathed as well!

  5. I'm embarrassingly slow on the uptake here, but thank you for the YCDT nod. :) I hope things are going well and have evened out a bit for you!
